The EMI Faculty Training Workshop of Formosa Plastics Group's three universities

At MCUT, English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses were primarily concentrated in graduate programs. Since many master's and Ph.D. programs recruit international students, a considerable number of EMI courses have been offered. In response to the government's goal of establishing a bilingual nation by 2030, our university has been promoting a bilingual program since the 112th academic year. We are fully committed to implementing bilingual education at the undergraduate level. Over the past year, various academic departments have introduced numerous EMI courses. To ensure that EMI instructors have a comprehensive understanding of teaching methods and language use in English-Medium Instruction, the Teaching and Learning Resources Center offers a diverse range of EMI faculty training channels. These channels aim to support all faculty members in enhancing their knowledge and quality of English instruction while also strengthening students' professional English proficiency.
For the first semester of the 113th academic year, Teaching and Learning Resource Center, in collaboration with Chang Gung University and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, co-organized an EMI training workshop. The workshop invited Associate Professor Tun-Whei Isabel Chuo from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Associate Professor Chia-Feng Lu from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Director Jennifer Tang of the Center of Bilingual Education from Chang Gung University to serve as the training instructors. In the course, Associate Professor Cho shared how to use correct English grammar and vocabulary to clearly explain the course content to students in EMI classes. She also shared strategies for outlining the course content before the class begins and reviewing key points at the end of the lesson to help students reinforce their understanding of the material. Associate Professor Lu guided the teachers in the hands-on use of the online tool, Miro, utilizing digital sticky notes within the software to organize course highlights to enhance students' understanding of the course. He also explained to the teachers how they can use the software to design classroom exercises that allow students to solve problems in groups, thereby increasing their participation in the learning process. Director Tang analyzed the trainee teachers' EMI teaching performance during the final demonstration test and provided t practical improvement suggestions to help them enhance their English-Medium Instruction skills.
The EMI Faculty Training of Formosa Plastics Group's three universities not only helps instructors improve their ability and skills in using English as the primary language of instruction but also enhances teaching methods. This, in turn, promotes campus internationalization and strengthens students' English communication skills.
